
How deep should a garage be for a car collector in Arizona?

A car collector's garage in Arizona should be at least 24 feet deep for a single row of cars, and 30 to 40 feet or more if you want to park nose-to-tail or fit a lift. A standard two-car garage runs about 20 feet deep, which barely fits a modern SUV with room to open the tailgate. A collector needs more: depth to walk around the cars, height for a lift, and width to open doors without dinging the paint. For a lift, plan a 12-foot ceiling. In the desert, two more things matter: climate control to protect the cars from heat, and the code-required fire separation between the garage and the house.
The right size depends on how you store and use the cars. A daily-driver collection parked side by side needs width. A showpiece collection stacked on lifts or parked deep needs height and length. Below are the real numbers for depth, height, width, climate control, and the Arizona code that governs it all.
How deep a collector garage should be
Plan at least 24 feet of depth per bay for a collector garage, and 30 to 40+ feet if you want to stack cars front to back or work around them. Depth is the dimension most people underestimate. Here is how the choices play out:
- One car per bay, side by side. A minimum of 24 feet deep gives room to park a long vehicle and still walk behind it and open the trunk. Many builders go to 25 or 26 feet for comfort.
- Two cars nose-to-tail in one bay. Plan 40 to 44 feet deep to fit two cars front to back with working space between and around them. This stores more cars on less width but means moving one car to reach the other.
- Room to work and detail. A collector who details, wrenches, or displays cars wants extra depth and width on top of the parking footprint, so there is space for a workbench, a detailing cart, and walking room on all sides.
Width matters as much as depth. A standard 9-foot-wide parking space is tight for a valued car. Plan 12 feet of width per car so doors open fully without contact, and more if the cars sit side by side with a lift between them. The goal is to never squeeze past a fender. Ceiling height and car lifts
A collector garage that uses lifts needs a ceiling of about 12 feet, and a standard 9- or 10-foot garage ceiling will not fit most two-post or four-post lifts with a car parked underneath. A car lift doubles your storage by stacking one car over another, which is how collectors fit more cars on the same slab. The height math is straightforward: you need room for the lift's rise, the height of the car on top, and the height of the car parked beneath, plus clearance.
Most full-rise two-post and four-post lifts call for a ceiling around 11 to 12 feet to stack two normal cars, and taller if either vehicle is an SUV or truck. Low-rise and mid-rise lifts work under a lower ceiling but only raise a car a few feet, which is good for service, not for stacking. If you know you want to stack cars, build the ceiling at 12 feet or more from the start. Raising a garage roof later is a major structural job. A taller garage also helps in Arizona for a second reason: heat rises, so a higher ceiling keeps the hot air above the cars and the working zone.
The garage floor matters too. A lift puts heavy point loads on the slab, so the concrete needs to be thick enough and reinforced to carry it. A standard 4-inch garage slab is often too thin for a full lift. Climate control for cars in the desert
A collector garage in Arizona should be insulated and climate controlled, because a closed garage in the Phoenix sun can reach well over 110 degrees and that heat is hard on cars. Heat degrades tires, dries out rubber seals and hoses, ages interiors, and stresses batteries and fluids. For a valued collection, an uncooled garage is a slow-motion problem. The fix starts with the building envelope.
Insulation is the first step, because it slows the desert heat coming through the walls and roof. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that insulation provides "an effective resistance to the flow of heat," and "the higher the R-value, the greater the insulating effectiveness." A collector garage should be insulated like a living space, not left as bare block, so the cooling system is not fighting the sun all day. A reflective or cool roof over the garage helps too. After insulation, add cooling: a dedicated mini-split or a separate HVAC zone holds the garage at a steady, moderate temperature without overworking the home's main system. Many collectors target the high 70s to low 80s, cool enough to protect the cars without the cost of refrigerating a huge space.
Humidity is rarely a problem in Arizona's dry air, which is one advantage the desert gives a car collection. The bigger enemies are heat and dust. The Arizona code: garage-to-house separation
Arizona's building code requires a fire-rated separation between an attached garage and the house, and a collector garage with extra electrical and a lift must meet it. Under the 2021 International Residential Code, Section R302.6, the garage must be separated from the residence by "not less than 1/2-inch gypsum board applied to the garage side." Where there are habitable rooms above the garage, the separation steps up: "garages beneath habitable rooms shall be separated from all habitable rooms above by not less than 5/8-inch Type X gypsum board or equivalent." This is the fire wall that buys time if a car or fuel ignites, and the inspector checks it.
The IRC's Chapter 3 building-planning rules also govern the garage floor, the door between the garage and house, and the electrical. A collector garage usually adds a lot of power: lift circuits, a compressor, lighting, EV chargers, and tool outlets. All of it must be on properly sized circuits with the protection the code requires, and the door from the garage into the house must be self-closing and rated. Build the depth, height, slab, insulation, and code separation into the original plan. A collector garage is one of the few luxury features that is almost impossible to retrofit, because depth, ceiling height, and a thick slab are all set in the foundation and framing. Get the numbers right with your builder up front, and the garage will hold and protect the collection for decades.
