
What utilities and hookups does an RV garage need?
A full RV garage needs four hookups: a 50-amp, 240-volt RV outlet, a water line, a sewer dump or macerator, and ventilation for fumes. Add these utilities plus a sub-panel, lighting, and a hose bib. In Arizona, plan a mini-split for cooling, and rough it all in during the build.
Power, water, waste, and air: those are the four systems an RV bay needs before it earns the name RV garage. That means a 50-amp, 240-volt electrical outlet for the coach, a water line, a sewer dump or macerator connection, and ventilation to clear engine and battery fumes. Around those, plan a dedicated electrical sub-panel, bright lighting, a hose bib, and in Arizona a mini-split to fight the heat. The 50-amp RV outlet matters most, because a large motorhome draws far more power than a wall plug can give, and rewiring a finished garage for it is costly. Rough in every line during the build, while the slab is still open and the crew is on site, since trenching across a finished floor or a landscaped yard afterward is expensive and disruptive.

The 50-amp RV electrical hookup
The heart of an RV garage hookup is a 50-amp, 240-volt RV outlet. A large coach needs that much power. A 50-amp RV service is a 240-volt connection wired to a four-prong outlet. It gives the coach two 120-volt legs, a neutral, and a ground. That lets a big Class A run two roof air conditioners, a fridge, a microwave, and chargers at once without tripping. A standard 120-volt wall plug gives only 15 or 20 amps. That is far too little to power a coach at rest.
Plan the outlet near where the coach parks. Run it on its own circuit from the garage sub-panel. Many owners install both a 50-amp outlet and a 30-amp one, so any RV can plug in. A weatherproof RV pedestal or a recessed box keeps the connection tidy and safe. Size the sub-panel for the RV load plus the lights, the door opener, shop tools, and a mini-split. That way you are not maxed out the day you move in. An RV outlet is a specialty circuit. Have a licensed electrician size and install it to the electrical code your city or county has adopted.
Water, sewer, and the dump connection
Water and sewer turn a parking bay into a place you can service and live out of the coach. A water line to a hose bib lets you fill the fresh tank, wash the RV, and connect city water when the coach is parked inside. Run it where the coach's fill and city-water inlet sit, and add a frost-proof bib so a rare Arizona freeze does not crack it. A backflow preventer keeps RV water from feeding back into the house supply.
The sewer side has two common setups. The first is a dump connection, a capped sewer or septic inlet in the slab that the coach's waste hose empties into, so you can dump black and gray tanks at home instead of at a station. The second is a macerator, a pump that grinds waste and pushes it through a small-diameter line, which is useful when the coach sits below or far from the sewer connection and gravity will not do the job. Either way, the connection ties into the home's sewer or the septic system. The system has to have the capacity to take it. On a septic lot, confirm the tank and leach field can handle the added load before you add a dump. A black-tank dump sends concentrated waste into the system, so this is not a small add on a rural parcel. Plan a floor drain and a sloped slab so washdown water and spills drain out. The code already wants a garage floor to slope toward the vehicle door, so this lines up with IRC Section R309. A trench drain across the bay door is a clean way to catch rinse water on a deep RV slab.
Ventilation for an Arizona RV garage
Ventilation is the hookup people skip, and it matters most in a sealed building that holds an engine, fuel, and batteries. An RV idles, stores gasoline or diesel, and may charge lead-acid or lithium batteries that can off-gas. Those fumes need a way out. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that good ventilation removes indoor pollutants and moisture, and a garage that holds a vehicle needs that air exchange more than a normal room.
For a garage attached to or under living space, the DOE Building America Solution Center recommends a mechanical exhaust fan with "a minimum installed capacity of 70 cfm," vented straight outdoors, to "slightly depressurize the garage with reference to the house" so garage air is not pulled inside. A detached RV garage still needs ventilation for the people working in it and to clear fumes when the engine runs. In Arizona, ventilation pairs with cooling. A metal or block garage bakes in the summer. Many owners add a mini-split heat pump to make the space usable year round. It also protects the coach's seals, tires, and electronics from extreme heat. Plan an exhaust fan, passive vents or a powered roof vent, and the mini-split together. A roof vent is cheap to add during framing and pulls the hottest air off the top of a tall bay. Together they keep the building safe to work in and gentle on the coach.
Why to rough in utilities during the build
Roughing in every line during construction is far cheaper than adding it to a finished RV garage, the same logic as a pool or a casita. When the slab is still open, the plumber sets the water line, the dump inlet, and the floor drain in the right spots before the concrete is poured. The electrician runs the 50-amp feed and the sub-panel conduit while the walls are open. Trying to add a sewer dump or a 240-volt circuit after the slab is poured means cutting concrete, trenching across a landscaped yard, and patching. That can cost several times the rough-in price. A patched slab is also never as clean as one poured right the first time. The same is true for a water line buried under a finished floor.
Plan the layout around where the coach actually parks, since the outlet, the water bib, and the dump all need to reach the coach's connections. Confirm the utilities fit your zoning, since a detached RV garage on a rural lot may rely on a well and septic that have to take the added load, and the accessory-structure rules in unincorporated Maricopa County govern the building itself. Size the electrical and the septic for the full plan, including a future casita if you want one, so you are not undersized later. It is far cheaper to pull one larger feed and one bigger trench now than to redo the work when you add living space over the bay.
