Solar Reflectance Index (SRI)

In short

The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) is a single number that rates how cool a roof or paving surface stays in the sun. It combines how much sunlight a surface reflects with how well it sheds absorbed heat. A higher SRI means a cooler surface, which matters a lot under the Arizona sun.

How hot a roof surface gets in full sun comes down to one number: the Solar Reflectance Index, written SRI. It rolls two properties into a single score: solar reflectance (how much of the sun's energy the surface bounces back instead of absorbing) and thermal emittance (how readily the surface releases the heat it does absorb). A surface that reflects a lot and sheds heat fast stays cool and scores high; a dark, heat-trapping surface scores low.

The scale is anchored so a standard black surface is about 0, and a standard white surface is about 100, with very reflective products able to score even higher. A higher SRI means a cooler roof. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that a reflective roof can stay more than 50°F cooler than a conventional roof on a sunny summer afternoon, and white roofing reflects about 60 to 90 percent of sunlight while dark conventional roofing reflects much less.

In Arizona, SRI is a direct lever on your cooling bill. Roof surfaces here can hit 150°F or more, and that heat soaks into the attic and pushes against your insulation all afternoon. A high-SRI cool roof keeps the roof deck cooler, which lowers attic temperature and cuts the cooling load your air conditioner has to overcome through the worst of summer.

For example, the U.S. EPA reports that in air-conditioned homes, the solar reflectance of a cool roof can cut peak cooling demand by 11 to 27 percent. A Scottsdale builder choosing between two tile colors can compare their SRI or reflectance values and pick the one that runs cooler, with no change to the home's design.

SRI works alongside other heat defenses, a radiant barrier in the attic, good insulation, and the home's thermal mass. On a desert custom home, asking for the SRI of a roof product is a simple, concrete way to compare options on the metric that actually drives summer comfort and cost.
