IRC R316 Foam Plastic: Thermal Barriers and Ignition Barriers

IRC Section R316 controls foam plastic insulation, which burns fast and gives off heavy smoke. The code caps its flame spread and smoke rating, and it requires a thermal barrier, usually half-inch gypsum board, between the foam and the living space. Attics and crawl spaces with limited access can use a lighter ignition barrier instead.

Foam plastic insulation does a lot of good in an Arizona home, but it has one problem: it burns fast and throws off thick, black smoke. IRC Section R316 is the code's answer. It limits how the foam can burn, and it forces a fire-rated cover between the foam and the rooms you live in. Spray foam and rigid foam board both fall under it.

What R316 requires

R316 works in two layers. First, the foam itself has to pass a burn test. Foam plastic used in a home must have a flame spread index of 75 or less and a smoke-developed index of 450 or less, measured at the thickness you plan to install. Second, the foam has to sit behind a thermal barrier that holds back fire long enough for people to get out. R316.4 puts it this way:

foam plastic shall be separated from the interior of a building by an approved thermal barrier of not less than 1/2 inch gypsum wallboard

Half-inch gypsum board (standard drywall) is the common way to meet it. A 23/32 inch wood structural panel, or any product tested to the NFPA 275 fire standard, also works. The idea is simple: you should not be able to see or touch bare foam from inside a finished room.

The ignition barrier exception for attics and crawl spaces

Attics and crawl spaces get an easier rule. Where the space is entered only to service utilities and access is limited, the foam can be covered by a lighter ignition barrier instead of the full thermal barrier. An ignition barrier is a thinner protective layer, such as 1.5 inch mineral fiber, 0.25 inch wood structural panel, or 0.375 inch particleboard. Many spray foam products also carry an ICC evaluation report that lets them stay exposed in an attic with no cover at all, as long as the installer follows the tested conditions. This exception is why a foamed attic can show bare foam and still pass inspection.

What it means for an Arizona custom home

For example, take a common Arizona high-performance detail: spray foam applied to the underside of the roof deck to make a sealed, conditioned attic. Because that attic has no drywall on the roof slope, the foam is exposed. To pass, the builder either sprays a product listed for exposed use or coats the foam with an ignition barrier. In the garage the rule is tighter. Foam in a garage wall or ceiling has to sit behind 1/2 inch gypsum board, the same thermal barrier the house gets, because a garage is a frequent ignition point. Insulated concrete form (ICF) walls follow R316 too: the foam faces have to be covered with 1/2 inch gypsum board on the inside.

Which edition applies to your build

R316's numbers, the 75 flame spread limit, the 450 smoke limit, and the 1/2 inch thermal barrier, hold steady across the 2018, 2021, and 2024 IRC.
