
IRC R602: Wood Wall Framing & Bracing
IRC R602 sets the rules for wood-framed walls: what size studs to use, how far apart to space them, and how much braced wall panel a house needs to resist wind and earthquakes. A standard braced wall panel must be at least 48 inches long.
Section R602 of the International Residential Code (IRC) is the rulebook for wood-framed walls, the most common way custom homes in Arizona are built. It does two jobs: it sizes the studs that hold up the roof and floors, and it sets how much wall bracing a house needs so it does not rack and lean over in a windstorm. Both halves get checked at the framing inspection, so getting them right keeps the build on schedule.
Stud size and spacing
R602.3 sizes the vertical studs in a wall and sends you to Table R602.3(5) for the limits. The two numbers a homeowner hears most are 16 inches and 24 inches on center, meaning the spacing from the center of one stud to the next. A typical exterior bearing wall uses 2x6 studs at 16 inches on center, which gives room for more insulation and carries more load. Interior nonbearing walls can use lighter framing: the code allows 2x3 studs at 24 inches on center, or flat 2x4s at 16 inches on center, as long as they are not part of a braced wall line.
The header over a window or door is part of this chapter too. A header is the beam that carries the load above an opening down to the studs on each side, and R602 sets how big it has to be for a given span.
Braced wall panels
R602.10 is the bracing rule, and it is the part inspectors scrutinize. A braced wall panel is a length of wall built to resist sideways force from wind or an earthquake. The minimum length is the number to remember:
Each braced wall panel shall be not less than 48 inches in length.
A 48-inch panel covers three stud bays at 16-inch spacing or two bays at 24-inch spacing. These panels line up along braced wall lines spaced no more than 25 feet apart in most layouts. The code lists several approved bracing methods, but the common one is wood structural panel sheathing (plywood or OSB) nailed to the studs in a set pattern.
What it means for an Arizona custom home
For example, a one-story home in Scottsdale with lots of glass on the rear elevation has to make up the bracing it loses to those big windows somewhere else, usually with longer or continuously sheathed panels on the side walls. This is why a wall of windows facing the pool often pairs with a structural engineer's bracing plan rather than the prescriptive tables. Arizona sits in a low-seismic, moderate-wind zone, so wind governs most bracing here, not earthquakes. Two-story homes and tall great-room walls push past the simple tables fastest, and that is where an engineered design earns its cost.
Edition note
The stud-sizing tables and the 48-inch braced-panel minimum are consistent across the 2018, 2021, and 2024 IRC. The 2024 edition reorganized and clarified the bracing tables and added detailing for tall walls, but the core panel length and spacing logic held.
