
IRC E3607 System Grounding: How Your Home Ties to Earth and Why the Main Bond Matters
IRC Section E3607 grounds your home's electrical system at one point: the main service. There, the main bonding jumper ties the neutral to the metal enclosure, and the grounding electrode conductor runs to earth. This single bond is what makes a breaker trip during a ground fault instead of leaving metal parts live.
Grounding sounds like one idea, but the code treats it as two. Grounding ties your electrical system to the earth. Bonding ties all the metal parts together so they sit at the same voltage. Section E3607 of the International Residential Code sets where those two meet: one point, at your main service, and nowhere downstream of it.
The one bond point
Your system is grounded and bonded together at the main service, and only there. Inside the service enclosure, a part called the main bonding jumper connects the neutral wire to the metal box and to the equipment grounding wires. The code is exact about it:
An unspliced main bonding jumper shall be used to connect the equipment grounding conductor and the service-disconnect enclosure to the grounded conductor.
From that point, a grounding electrode conductor runs out to the earth connection. The neutral and the ground share one bond, made once.
Why neutral and ground split after that
Past the main service, the neutral and the ground never touch again. Every subpanel and circuit keeps them on separate bars. A detached casita or a garage subpanel is fed with a four-wire feeder for this reason: two hot wires, a neutral, and a separate ground. If the neutral and ground were re-bonded at a subpanel, normal current would start flowing on the ground wires and on metal parts, which is exactly what the single-point rule prevents.
What the bond actually does for you
The main bond is a safety device, not a formality. For example, a hot wire inside your dryer can rub through its jacket and touch the metal frame. With a solid bond and a ground path, that fault turns into a dead short. The breaker sees a surge of current and trips in a fraction of a second. Without the bond, the dryer frame can sit quietly energized, waiting for someone to touch it and the floor at once. The bond turns a hidden hazard into a tripped breaker.
The Arizona ground is the weak link
The bond is only as good as the earth connection it feeds, and desert soil is a poor conductor. Dry, rocky ground and caliche resist current far more than damp soil does. That is why the electrode side of the system, covered in the grounding electrode system, leans on the concrete-encased electrode cast into your foundation footing. Monsoon lightning gives you a second reason to want a solid path to earth. The grounding conductor is sized from your service, so it scales with your electrical service and panel. Add a whole-house generator or battery and the inspector checks grounding and bonding a second time at the transfer equipment. Section E3607 of the 2021 IRC carries the full text.
