IRC E3703 Required Branch Circuits: The Kitchen, Laundry, and Bath Circuits Your Home Needs

Your electrician does not get to guess how many circuits your kitchen or laundry room needs. Section E3703 of the International Residential Code sets the floor. It names the branch circuits every new home must have, separate from the general lighting and outlet circuits, so the rooms that pull the most power do not share one overloaded wire.

The circuits the code requires

E3703 names five required circuits on top of your general-purpose wiring:

  • Two or more 20-amp small-appliance circuits for the kitchen, dining room, and pantry.
  • One 20-amp circuit for the laundry area.
  • One 20-amp circuit for the bathrooms.
  • One 20-amp circuit for the garage.
  • One dedicated circuit for central heating equipment.

The code states the kitchen rule plainly:

A minimum of two 20-ampere-rated small-appliance branch circuits shall be provided.

Each of these runs on 20 amps, which uses 12-gauge copper wire. That is a step up from the 15-amp, 14-gauge wire behind most lighting.

Why the kitchen needs two circuits

The two-circuit kitchen rule exists because small appliances draw heavy current. A 20-amp circuit carries about 2,400 watts (20 amps times 120 volts). A single air fryer can pull 1,500 watts, and a toaster oven another 1,200. Run both on one circuit and the breaker trips. For example, splitting the counter outlets across two circuits lets a Scottsdale family run the coffee maker, the toaster, and a griddle at breakfast without going dark. The two circuits share the counter, so side-by-side outlets usually sit on different ones.

Laundry, bathroom, and garage circuits

Three more circuits each guard against a specific overload.

  • The laundry circuit is a 20-amp line that serves only the laundry-area outlets. It keeps a washer and a plug-in gas dryer off a shared circuit.
  • The bathroom circuit is a 20-amp line for the bathroom outlets. One such circuit can feed several bathrooms, or it can serve everything in one bathroom, but it cannot mix with general room wiring. This matters because a hair dryer alone pulls up to 1,800 watts.
  • The garage circuit is a 20-amp, 120-volt line for garage outlets. In an Arizona garage it often feeds a second freezer, which is why the code keeps it off the house lighting. An RV garage needs more than that one circuit anyway, since a 30- or 50-amp RV receptacle is a dedicated run of its own.

Dedicated circuits for the big equipment

Central heating equipment gets its own circuit, and so do most large appliances. The code requires an individual branch circuit for the furnace or air handler. Permanently wired air conditioning and its helpers, like a condensate pump, can share that heating circuit. Beyond E3703, your dishwasher, disposal, microwave, and electric range each land on a circuit sized to the appliance nameplate. The rule is the same across Arizona

Required branch circuits do not change from Phoenix to Casa Grande. Every Arizona city adopts these minimums through the IRC, so the two kitchen circuits and the laundry, bath, and garage circuits apply everywhere. One thing does change the count: E3703 writes these requirements per dwelling unit. A detached casita with its own kitchen is a second dwelling unit, so the list starts over out there. What varies by city is the code edition, which can affect related rules like tamper-resistant and GFCI outlets. Confirm your city's edition in the building code editions by city reference.
