IRC E3901 Receptacle Placement: The 6-Foot Rule and Kitchen Outlets

IRC Section E3901 decides where the outlets go in your home. The main rule is that no point along a wall is more than 6 feet from a receptacle, which spaces them about 12 feet apart. Kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, and outdoor areas each get their own required outlets on top of that.

Where the outlets land is not up to wherever the electrician feels like drilling. Section E3901 of the International Residential Code sets it. These are rules to know before your walls close up. Sliding a couch across a room to reach a far-off outlet is a daily annoyance you can design out now.

The 6-foot rule

The core rule for living spaces is easy to picture:

no point along the floor line in any wall space is more than 6 feet, measured horizontally, from a receptacle outlet.

In practice that spaces outlets about 12 feet apart. It also means any stretch of wall 2 feet wide or more gets its own outlet, including the short wall beside a doorway. Follow it and a lamp cord reaches a wall from anywhere in the room, with no extension cords stretched across a doorway.

For example, a 16-foot bedroom wall with a single outlet at its midpoint leaves both corners 8 feet away, and the inspector writes it up. Set the outlets 2 feet in from each corner instead and they land 12 feet apart, which puts the worst spot on that wall, the midpoint, exactly 6 feet from each one.

Kitchen counters

Counters get a tighter rule, because that is where small appliances plug in. Along a counter, no point can be more than 24 inches from an outlet. That is close enough for a mixer or a toaster to reach without an extension cord. Those outlets sit on or above the counter, and no more than 20 inches above it. An island or peninsula counter that is big enough needs at least one of its own.

Bathrooms, hallways, and outside

A few spots carry their own rules. Every bathroom needs an outlet within 3 feet of the outside edge of each sink basin. A hallway 10 feet or longer needs at least one. Outside, the code calls for an outlet at the front and back of the house, plus one in the garage and one in the laundry area. Many of these have to be shock-protected as well, which is a separate rule.

Universal, not desert-specific

Receptacle placement is one part of the code that does not change from the desert to the mountains. Arizona cities and counties adopt the national electrical rules through the IRC. So the 6-foot rule and the counter spacing read the same in Scottsdale and in Casa Grande. What shifts by city is the code edition your AHJ enforces, and that mostly moves the shock-protection line. Confirm your edition in the building code editions by city reference.

One local wrinkle is worth knowing. E3901 counts by dwelling unit, not by building. A detached casita is its own dwelling unit, so the 6-foot rule starts over inside it. A 400-square-foot guest house still owes counter outlets and an outlet by the bathroom sink.

Where placement stops and protection starts

Placement is only half the story. The other half is which of these outlets have to be GFCI or AFCI protected, and how they all land back on your electrical service and panel.
