
IRC P2708 Shower Requirements: The 900-Square-Inch Rule and Anti-Scald Valves
IRC Section P2708 requires a shower compartment to hold at least 900 square inches of interior space and measure at least 30 inches across, kept clear to 70 inches above the drain. It also requires an anti-scald valve, balanced-pressure or thermostatic, that limits water to 120 degrees Fahrenheit at the head.
A custom shower has two rules that matter most. It has to be big enough to actually stand and turn around in, and it has to protect you from a sudden blast of scalding water. Section P2708 of the International Residential Code sets both. If you are planning a large walk-in shower, the kind common in Scottsdale and Cave Creek custom homes, these numbers shape the tile layout before the first stud goes up.
The minimum size
A shower cannot be a cramped box. The code sets a floor on how much room it has to give you:
Shower compartments shall have not less than 900 square inches of interior cross-sectional area.
That 900 square inches is measured inside the finished walls, and the compartment also has to be at least 30 inches across in its smallest direction. Both of those have to hold from the threshold up to at least 70 inches above the drain, so the space does not pinch in at shoulder height. Fixture valves, the showerhead, and grab bars do not count against the room. There is one trade allowed: a narrower 25-inch width is fine if the shower makes up for it with at least 1,300 square inches of area.
For a doorless walk-in, a shape people love in the desert for its open, spa feel, the same minimums apply at the showerhead. Designers often run these showers to 4 feet by 5 feet or larger, well past the floor, which is why the code rarely limits a custom design. It just stops a shower from being shrunk into an unusable corner.
The anti-scald valve
The second rule is a safety device you cannot see. Section P2708.4 requires every shower and tub-shower valve to control temperature on its own, using one of three types: balanced-pressure, thermostatic, or a combination of both. The valve has to be set so it can never send water hotter than 120 degrees Fahrenheit to the head.
Here is why it matters. For example, in an older-style valve, when someone flushes a toilet or starts the dishwasher, cold water gets pulled away and the shower suddenly runs hot. A balanced-pressure valve senses that shift and holds the mix steady. A thermostatic valve watches the actual temperature. In Arizona, this cuts two ways. A gas or heat-pump water heater can deliver very hot water, and in summer the cold line itself can run warm because the pipe sits in hot ground, so a good valve keeps the shower from swinging to a scald. These valves carry a standard stamp, either ASSE 1016 or ASME A112.18.1, which your inspector checks.
Settle the numbers before the tile
Both of these rules land on the plan, not on the punch list. The 900 square inches and the 30-inch width decide the framed opening; the valve type decides what sits inside the wall.
