
IRC P3201 Fixture Traps: The Water Seal That Keeps Sewer Gas Out
IRC Section P3201 governs the traps under every fixture, the U-shaped bends that hold a water seal against sewer gas. Each trap needs a seal 2 to 4 inches deep, and each fixture needs its own. S-traps, bell traps, and drum traps are banned. In dry Arizona air, unused traps evaporate and must be refilled.
Every sink, tub, shower, and floor drain in your home has a U-shaped bend in the pipe just below it. That bend, the trap, holds a small plug of water that blocks sewer gas from rising into the room. Section P3201 of the International Residential Code controls how deep that water plug has to be, how each fixture connects to it, and which trap designs are banned. In Arizona's dry air, one rule in this section matters more than the rest: keeping the trap from drying out.
How deep the water seal has to be
The whole system works on a shallow pool of water sitting in the trap. The code fixes how much:
Each fixture trap shall have a liquid seal of not less than 2 inches and not more than 4 inches.
Less than 2 inches and the seal is too thin to hold back gas or gets siphoned away too easily. More than 4 inches and the trap starts catching debris and clogging. Each fixture also has to have its own trap. The code bars putting two traps in a row on one fixture, which would trap air between them and slow the drain to a crawl. And the trap has to sit close to the fixture, no more than 24 inches of vertical drop from the fixture outlet down to the trap.
The traps you cannot use
Section P3201.5 bans several old or unreliable trap designs. The one a homeowner is most likely to run into is the S-trap, the shape that curves down, back up, and then straight down again. An S-trap can siphon its own water out as the fixture drains, breaking the seal. Also prohibited:
- Bell traps and drum traps, older designs that clog and are hard to clear.
- Crown-vented traps, where a vent is taken off the top of the trap.
- Traps with moving parts, which fail over time.
The modern P-trap, the shape under every code-compliant sink, is what replaces all of these. Trap sizes are set by fixture: a lavatory uses a 1-1/4 inch trap, a kitchen sink or tub uses 1-1/2 inch, and a shower or floor drain uses 2 inch.
Why dry Arizona air makes this a real problem
A trap only works while it holds water, and water evaporates. In the low humidity of the Phoenix and Scottsdale area, a trap on a fixture nobody uses can dry out in weeks. Think of a guest-bath shower, a garage floor drain, the bathroom in a detached casita that hosts visitors twice a year, or a second home closed up for the summer. Once it does, sewer gas drifts straight up into the house, and the fix is as simple as running the tap for a moment. For fixtures that sit unused, the code allows a trap seal primer, a small valve that trickles a little water into the trap to top it off, or a barrier-type device that seals the drain when it runs dry. For example, say a Scottsdale owner locks up a second home from May through September. Nothing refills those 2-inch seals for four months, so the family walks back into a house that smells like the sewer main. Thirty seconds at each tap clears it. That is why a dried-out trap is almost always the answer when a rarely used Arizona bathroom starts to smell.
Decide about primers before rough-in
If your plan has a garage floor drain or a bathroom that will sit idle for months, ask your plumber for a trap seal primer on those two while the walls are open. It is a small line item then and a wall repair later. A trap only holds its seal if the drain is vented, which is why traps and the vents that run through the roof get designed together, and both feed the drainage system under the house.
